  1. Making Nonslip Socks

    December 19, 2011 by crystal

    Toddler:

    tod·dler  [tod-ler] n.

    1. One who toddles, especially a young child learning to walk.*

Yep. That’s Charlotte.  While she’s quite confident in her walking abilities, she’s not all that stable just yet. Why on earth children’s clothing makers would create toddler socks without skidproof bottoms is beyond me. We have quite a few really slippery socks, and I set out to fix this problem.

    Nonslip Socks
    You’ll need:
Fabric paint (I bought white and hot pink puff paint)
Cardboard (I used an empty cereal box)
    A pencil
    Scissors

First, use your little one’s foot or a shoe to trace a fake foot on the cardboard. You’ll need two of these little feet.

Slip the cardboard feet into your socks. This creates a hard surface to paint on. Paint on dots or designs, and wait for your socks to dry.

I wash Charlotte’s clothes on gentle and dry them on low, and the nonslip bottoms have stayed put so far!

  2. BPA: Why My Baby Doesn’t Eat Canned Food

    November 23, 2011 by crystal

Soup condensed, and canned, of the Campbell's ...

    Image via Wikipedia

For the past year or so, canned foods have been on my list of foods we try to avoid. Aside from the sodium and diminished nutrients, most canned foods contain BPA. I kept meaning to write about what I’ve learned about BPA, and it kept getting pushed to the back burner. Then, I received an email from 7th Generation, with an article titled BPA in Thanksgiving Canned Food. (more…)

  3. Food Labels 101

    November 7, 2011 by crystal

The grocery store can be a super confusing place. When you’re trying to make the right decisions for your family, the array of claims on food labels can be overwhelming. I have learned that just because someone says something – or prints it on a label – that does not make it true. So what’s a savvy shopper to do? I’ve done some digging, and decoded a few commonly used food labels to help guide you through your next shopping trip. Enjoy! (more…)

  4. Television and Toddlers

    September 9, 2011 by crystal

Charlotte normally ignores the television entirely. She doesn’t seem to be interested in ESPN, Lifetime, or sitcoms. Which I think is awesome. However, flipping on kids’ shows definitely gets her attention. She will drop everything that she is doing, and stare at the television.  In moments like that, it’s really tempting to think, “She loves it so much – It can’t be that bad for her!” Often, the characters are singing sweet songs, practicing their letters, and modeling positive social behaviors like sharing. How can that be bad? (more…)

  7. Ecomom® Product Review

    August 15, 2011 by crystal

From the moment I got pregnant, I began to worry about the products in our home. I spent a crazy amount of time pouring over lotion and shampoo bottles and entering ingredients into Google. I learned what products are safe and work for my family, but I rarely branch out and try new products – It’s just too much work!

  8. Reversible Crib Rail Covers

    August 1, 2011 by crystal

I’m putting this on the list of things I wish I would have known before baby. I have the clear plastic guards for the front of the crib, but I never bothered with the sides. Charlotte doesn’t spend a lot of time in her crib unless she’s asleep, so I didn’t think I needed them. The fact that she has eight teeth and chews on everything really should have clued me in that this could be a problem. A few weeks ago, I walked into her room and discovered this. . .

  9. Sunscreen Safety Ratings

    July 11, 2011 by crystal

I have been slathering up in a Banana Boat since I was a little kid. And as a baby, my mom slathered me up in Water Babies. Who doesn’t love that little girl and dog on the bottle? I know that many of your first reactions to this article will be, “I’ve always used (insert favorite sunscreen here), and I turned out just fine!” Well, I’m here to tell you that (more…)
